The Reel School of Fly Fishing

Over the years, guide clients and friends have encouraged me to share my unique approach and love of flyangling with more people. Hence The Reel School of Flyfishing was formally established in 1996. Alone, this venture would be impossible, so I've enlisted the aid of a diverse group of acquaintances to spread our flyfishing gospel as we view the sport.

Our focus is to teach you how to efficiently pursue wild trout while experiencing the beautiful areas they inhabit. The only thing that we really ask of you: do not lose your focus; relax & have a great time in the outdoors. Simply, have some FUN!  Demystify the art of flyfishing with us, we assure your satisfaction & are confident you will be pleased with the sevice provided.

We are a diverse group of different personalities & each of us brings a particular talent. Our common denominator is...a love & enthusiasm for flyfishing & the thrill of sharing our passion with others.  Simply a superlative instructor or guide needs technical AND people skills & the ability to clearly & comfortably convey BOTH.

We offer four (4) distinct, scheduled clinics.  Emphasis is "hands on" demonstration & participation...both theory & practice.
The outdoor is the classroom, indoor lectures are non-existent, you will be breathing clean, High Sierra air. A maximum of three attendees per instructor is maintained; assuring unsurpassed personal attention & guidance.
  TWO-DAY BASIC SKILLS CLINICS*

BASIC SKILLS clinics* are intended for those new to the sport. Be assured, a sound foundation will be laid; so that you can thereafter enjoy flyfishing at your own pace and leisure. The group is small; a maximum 3 to 1** student to instructor ratio is maintained to assure optimum attention and guidance.

Your introduction will entail: 1) the two fundamental casts 2) three basic knots 3) trout foods along with their 4) matching fly selection 5) trout behavior 6) "reading water" 7) wading safety and 8) angling etiquette. The outdoors is the classroom; we are "in the field" & the emphasis is "hands-on" participation and demonstration. The objective of the clinic is learning in a relaxed atmosphere; encountering a wild mountain trout would be a bonus. We emphasize the "catch & release" ethic and the use of barbless hooks.

Fly fishers increase their probability of success IF they are aware of interacting variables. Some factors are: water temperature, clarity & flow; climatic conditions; insect activity, both aquatic & terrestrial & a trout's feeding behavior relative to the bugs' presence; fly choice & its proper presentation via casting.  The variables have to be synthesized for optimum results.  When you put it all together, it is very gratifying.  YOU MAY GET HOOKED! Paul McHugh, Outdoor feature writer for the San Francisco Chronicle once said to me, "So...the software is between your ears."

 ONE-DAY SPECIALTY CLINICS

One-Day Clinics are intended for those with previous fly fishing experience; are familiar with knots, can cast 25'
accurately & have hooked, landed & released some trout.  Match your preference with a clinic; dry fly or nymphing techniques, along with lake fly angling on a private lake.

Unlike the Basic Skills clinics; these are unstructured., free-flowing outings intended to provide some insights & nuances of various techniques usede to successfully dupe a wild trout.  The emphasis is "catch & release" & the use of barbless hooks...regardless of regulations.  The quarry will be Rainbows & Browns.

The dry fly & nymphing clinics will be on the "Wild Trout" waters of the Truckee and/or Little Truckee Rivers. Optimum conditions will determine the venues.  Considerations will be waters' temperatures. clarity & flow; climatic conditions; insect activity & the corresponding trout behavior.
