Frank R. Pisciotta is one of California's top, veteran, independent, fly fishing guides. In 2001, the host of a radio sports show inroduced him as the "Dean of Guides in the Truckee area". A native Californian, he has pursued trout within the state for over 40-plus years, from the lakes & streams of urban Marin county to the 10,000 feet plus John Muir Wilderness for the state fish...the golden trout. After graduation from the University of San Francisco, 1968-69 "on-the-ground" service in Vietnam & six months touring Europe as a civilian he had a brief  two year stint in the corporate world. He then became involved in a family craft business on the north slope of San Francisco's Telegraph Hill.  He started fly fishing in the spring of 1970...he has done such, exclusively, since.

During his first decade of fly fishing Frank became very familiar with Northern California waters; most especially the McCloud (...prior to the Nature Conservancy arrival) & Upper Sacramento Rivers, in addition to Hat Creek. In 1979 Frank personally built his first residence in Truckee; then focused on the area's, at the time, unbeknownst, quality fly angling waters. There, in 1984, he established his Thy Rod & Staff guide service. 2008 marked his 25th year guiding & instructing, exclusively, in the Truckee area.    Starting in 1992 his guide service became affiliated with the Orvis Endorsed Lodges, Outfitters & Guides (ELOG) program. He remains in the program & is the only Orvis Endorsed Guide in the northern Sierra.  In 1996, because of his expertise in fly angling & adeptness at instruction, he was encouraged by clients, friends & family to start the Reel School of Fly Fishing.

As a writer, Frank has authored articles in both the California Fly Fisher & NorthWest Fly Fishing magazines in addition to  subscription newsletters entitled Guided Waters & Stream Lines.  His Spring 2002 essay in North West Fly Fishing is acknowledged as the best ever treatise on fly fishing the TruckeeRiver. His chapter on the TruckeeRiver in Seth Norman's book Fly Fisher's Guide to Northern California, is the most thorough ever published in a book.  From  June 1999 to June 2001 he was the California writer for www.WestFly.com, arguably the most complete online fly fishing magazine on the Internet ; it targets five (5) western states, CaliforniaOregonWashingtonIdaho & western Montana

The Northern California Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers lists Frank as a program presenter.  His slide presentations (...currently entering the 21st Century via conversion to PowerPoint!) on "FlyFishing Opportunities in the Truckee-Tahoe Area", "The Truckee River" & "The Little Truckee...a unique FlyAngling Gem" have been well received by individual fly clubs, at times, standing-room only attendance at the Northern California Council of FlyFishers Conclaves, the FlyFishing Show in both San Rafael & Ontario California & most recently (2005) the International Women Fly Fishers 10th anniversary gathering at Squaw Valley USA, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics.

The well known angler-conservation group California Trout has twice presented Frank the coveted Stream Keepers Award.  The last time was 2000; as the executive director noted, because he "...speaks for the trout." Another twice is Frank's guide service being featured in lengthy articles in the OUTDOORS  section of  the San Francisco Chronicle. Also, Frank's guide's service has been noted in the New York Times Magazine, Los Angeles Times, Fly Fisherman Magazine & The Inside Angler.

During the 2001 season, an aspiring young guide flattered Frank by calling him the Dali Lama of flyfishing....little did the fella know that Frank is a perpetual student himself! He simply loves the sport & is willing to discuss and/or share it with any one who is receptive.
